Welcome to the Year 3/4 class page.

The information below will help you become familiar with our class routines and expectations, and support your child as they settle into their new class.

Classroom Routines

Year 3/4 use the junior cloakroom and each child has their own peg for storing coats, shoes, bags and lunch boxes. Children should bring their water bottle and book bag into the classroom each day.

To help keep our classroom organised and clutter-free, please do not bring any additional items or toys into school unless requested.

As the weather can be unpredictable, please ensure your child brings a coat to school every day. We encourage outdoor play whenever possible.

At the end of the school day, children will collect their belongings and be dismissed from the glass classroom door. Children attending after-school club or travelling by school taxi will be supported to make their way to the appropriate locations.

Homework

Homework is given out on a Monday and should be returned by the Friday of the same week.

Children will usually receive one piece of English or topic homework, which should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Occasionally, online homework may be set through Purple Mash, an educational platform used throughout the school. Each child will receive login details to access Purple Mash both in school and at home.

As part of their maths homework, children will practise their Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs). These short, practical activities are most effective when completed regularly for a few minutes each day. Each half term, children will be given a new KIRFs target, along with weekly activity cards and ideas for practising at home.

Children also have access to Times Tables Rock Stars through their individual username and password. This can be accessed on a tablet or computer and provides an enjoyable way to practise times tables at home.

Spellings

Children will have weekly spelling words linked to the Year 3 and 4 curriculum objectives.

Spellings are set every Monday on Spelling Shed and are also printed and stuck into spelling practice books. Children will then be tested on the following Monday.

Children are encouraged to practise using the interactive games and quizzes available on Spelling Shed, as well as through written activities in their spelling books.

If you experience any difficulties accessing online learning platforms at home, please contact the school office. We will be happy to provide alternative arrangements for homework and spelling practice where needed.

Reading Books and Reading Records

Children are encouraged to choose reading books to take home and will be provided with a reading record.

As part of developing independence, children will be encouraged to complete their own reading records each time they read. We aim for children to read at least five times each week and record their reading regularly.

Children may change their reading books whenever they need to. We greatly value parental support with reading and encourage you to listen to your child read, discuss books together and share your enjoyment of reading. Comments in reading records are always welcome and help us celebrate children's progress.

In school, children will also read independently and take part in guided reading lessons throughout the week.
