At our school, we use the online platform Spelling Shed to support the teaching and learning of spelling. Children are typically grouped according to their year group and are taught spelling patterns and rules that are linked to the relevant curriculum objectives. Where necessary, additional support or challenge is provided to ensure spelling activities meet individual learning needs.

Spellings are set weekly, and each child has their own login to Spelling Shed, where they can access their current spelling list, as well as a range of interactive games and challenges to help develop their spelling accuracy and reading fluency. New spellings are given on a Monday and children are tested on them the following Monday.

It is important that children understand the meaning of the words they are learning, as well as how to spell them correctly. One way we support this in school is by encouraging children to use a dictionary to look up unfamiliar words, learn their meanings and then use them in a sentence of their own.
