At Stainton CE School we live by our school values:

  • Love

  • Honesty

  • Respect

  • Forgiveness

  • Responsibility

  • Faith

These are embodied through our school motto: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ John 13:34-35.

These values are integrated into our everyday teaching and learning. We also refer to them discretely in our religious lessons.

RE is a vibrant and exciting subject to teach. At Stainton School, we teach our lessons by using and adapting the planning and suggestions from Understanding Christianity, Discovery RE, and Questful RE. As our school's mixed-age class structure is fluid, we examine each child's journey through Stainton and plan yearly to ensure progression and depth.

Understanding Christianity is a spiral curriculum, where children meet the same concepts as they progress through their journey but with added layers of depth. Questful RE also follows the same concepts. The concepts are shown below:

These concepts are supported by 'The Big Frieze', which is displayed in all classrooms. The Big Frieze is a large piece of artwork (Artist: Emma Yarlett) that visually tells the 'Big Story' of the Bible. It helps pupils understand the overarching story of the Bible, rather than seeing it as a collection of separate texts.

As our children progress through Stainton CE School, they learn more deeply about and from religion. Our pupils have lots of  Big Questions and we strongly encourage curiosity (being willing to explore religious ideas through reflection, empathy and imagination), fairness (listening carefully to the views of others) and respect (recognising the needs and concerns of others).

As the children progress through the various units of work, their learning is assessed through a variety of methods e.g. teacher observation, pupil discussions and written work. As well as learning about religious beliefs and practices, we also learn through religion and apply principles to other aspects of life.

The main religion which we focus upon is Christianity; in KS1 we also look at Islam and in KS2 we continue with Christianity and Islam and start to look at Buddhism. Through Questful RE we delve into different religions at different points in time.
