Using artefacts to deduce what life was like in pre-historic times

DT - exploring different textiles

Esero UK - Mars Day Interactive session

Story-telling week. Year 4/5 enjoyed listening to a story on the library bus.

Fantastic Friday - Sharing and celebrating our interests

Other children have been inspired by our Art topic - Textiles - using cross and back stitch. 2 children have started their own cross stitch project at home and shared it with friends in class.

Our current Geography and history topic is the Maya civilisation. So far, we have discovered where they lived and when the civilisation was at its peak.

Cross curricular study - Science (electricity) and Design and technology (use electrical and mechanical systems).

Crime and punishment

As part of our History studies, we have been looking at the changes in crime and punishment through the centuries. Today, we had two magistrates from Carlisle courts join us to hold a mock trial, which taught us about the current justice system. At the end, our own magistrates had to reach a verdict of guilty or not guilty based on the evidence given.

Science - sound. We investigated how sound travels and applied our scientific vocabulary to our explanation

Year 4/5 went to Glasgow to visit the Riverside Museum and Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Out topic was a UK urban study with a focus on Glasgow. The children were delighted to spot the Finniestoun Crane as we headed to the Riverside Museum. They have been researching the crane in order to create a replica model as a prototype with working mechanisms for a toy shop souvenir. The children have also studied what life was like in the Glasgow shipyards pre 21st century. Standing on the riverbank where it all happened helped them understand the necessary use of rivers for industry. They identified models of the boats they had previously researched for their Glasgow shipbuilding databases in Computing: naval boats, paddlesteamers and cruise ships.

Next, we headed to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. We have been studying the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, so to see examples of furniture and glasswork designed by him was exciting. We have been looking at his use of vertical lines, squares and flowers (especially roses) in his designs. In the gallery, we could also appreciate his use of the human form in his designs. We enjoyed picking out our favourite paintings in the Glasgow Boys exhibition and were even lucky enough to see Salvador Dali's painting og Christ of Saint John of the Cross.
