Year 5 science week - can forces improve our quality of life?

Year 5 began the week with an online meeting with physiotherapist Mrs Atkinson. The children learnt about levers and pulleys in their bodies. They also learnt about the physical difficulties people develop as they get older as well as problems children can have with the movement of their muscles. The children then developed their knowledge of forces and motion by learning about pulleys. A pulley is a simple machine which is useful for lifting things. It reduces the effort required to raise a load. It consists of a wheel with a groove through which a string or rope runs. The rope has a load on one end and someone or something pulling at the other end.

After investigating how increasing the number of pulleys can reduce effort required, the children then started the design and technology element of their project. They applied their knowledge of pulleys to build a mechanism that could improve someone's quality of life. The videos show the people they aimed to help by using a pulley mechanism. Well done Year 5.
